In 1981, Al Rendon received an assignment that changed the content of much of his photography over the next 25 years. The San Antonio Fiesta Commission sent Al to photograph the events of a charreada as one of the events of San Antonio’s annual Fiesta. The assignment became an obsession; Al befriended members of the San Antonio Charro Association. He was there to photograph installation of officers, presentation of the queens, the crowds and the action.
The result is well documented in Charreada: Mexican Rodeo in Texas, published by University of North Texas Press in 2002. The photos have been exhibited throughout the country. Signed copies of Charreada: Mexican Rodeo in Texas ($25) and digital archival prints are available. |
